although….. “Charlie would not actually drown as in order for water to flow into an airtight room, air must flow out. The water would only rise to the top of the broken porthole.”

-more on Charlie’s death from Lostpedia
“Charlie’s death, while dramatically powerful, was neither logically necessary, nor, in fact, physically possible as shown.
Also there was no need to close the door when the porthole blew. The station would have flooded, but only to the level of the top of the porthole, as the station itself is airtight (if it wasn’t, the water in the pool where they entered the station would not remain at its current level; it would rise to fill the entire station). Charlie and Desmond would have both remained safe and alive. Charlie might be forgiven for not working this out in the heat of the moment. But even if he thought the station were about to be flooded, he and Desmond would have had time to jump into the water and swim to the surface.
Charlie traps himself in the communications room by shutting the watertight hatch while inside. He could have shut the door behind him after exiting. But he did ensure that Desmond wouldn’t enter and risk himself by talking to Penny.
Even if the station were to be flooded, both Desmond and Charlie had enough time to put on diving gear and swim out.”
